A fun-filled trip with kids to Lapland!

northern lights

Little ones grow up quickly, and there’s only so much time in which you can pursue their dreams together as a family. Make Christmas wishes come true next year with a family trip to see Santa in Lapland. You’ll be surrounded by a winter wonderland of twinkling lights, chocolate box villages, gentle reindeer and, crucially, a fairy tale covering of icing-sugar snow. If you’re hoping to plan the memory of a lifetime, read on for some tips on what to include.

A sledding tour

Dashing through the snow on a sleigh drawn by playful huskies is the perfect way to get your holiday off to an exhilarating start. Visit the dogs and puppies for a frolic before climbing in to your sled and being sped across an Arctic landscape of verdant, snow-covered firs and frozen skies. For an extra-magical touch, go at night and make an attempt to see the elusive Northern Lights. If you don’t strike it lucky, the velvety, star-spangled skies will still make it feel worth your while.

A visit to see Santa

This is the main event on your trip, bring along your camera and prepare to be enchanted; it’s time to see the legend himself. Make sure you allow plenty of time for your day’s Santa trip, and if you can, book ahead so you don’t have to queue and become restless – the last thing you want is for little ones to become disgruntled in their big moment. You’ll also be able to get acquainted with Santa’s friends including the reindeer and elves.

Cross-country skiing

Anyone can have a bash at skiing on a ski slope, but how many can claim they’ve done it in a true Arctic setting? A great family activity, cross-country skiing is a warming and active diversion from sightseeing. If you prefer your step a little more secure, strap on a pair of snowshoes and hike safely over the surface of the snow.

Arktikum

For budding historians, this contemporary museum offers an indoor glimpse of the history behind Finland’s cultural treasures. With its interactive exhibits, beautiful images of the Northern Lights and collection of pristinely presented artefacts, Arktikum is the perfect spot to while away a snowy morning.

Remember to do your research, bring along some cosy clothing and book Santa trips well in advance for the best possible experience. And don’t forget your Christmas list.
